For the past decade, I have served as a clinical supervisor in psychiatric departments, navigating the complexities of acute and open wards with a focus on depression and psychoses. A recurring and profound issue within these walls is the subject of suicidality. Many patients see self-inflicted death as their only escape, unaware that it represents the end of all potential paths.
Clinical experience teaches us that it isn’t the desire for death that leads to suicidal tendencies. Rather, it’s the narrowing of one’s focus to a binary deadlock: “Either this pain or problem must vanish, or I will.” This limited viewpoint obscures all other options, as pain, guilt, self-reproach, and catastrophic thinking flood the psyche. To the part of the personality that believes it must cope alone, the situation appears hopeless.
Yet, when we engage with the different facets and ego-states of an individual’s personality, we discover profound and often simple-to-implement suggestions for change. The main issue in suicidality is the digital state of thinking: absence of pain – or death, dissolution of all “faults” – or death.
What often goes unrecognized is that many problematic life circumstances are the outcomes of unfavorable and failed attempts at solutions. People invest—whether in real estate, businesses, or relationships—with the best intentions. But failure of projects does not equate to a failure of self or personality. Nor does it signify that the creative side, which aimed for a seemingly beneficial resolution, has failed. It merely made a misjudgment.
The suicide alternative approach seeks to activate all internal aspects of a person: the creative, the self-caring, the thorough, the rational, the loving. The goal is to foster a constructive and creative dialogue among these facets. The notion of life termination becomes irrelevant when multiple internal voices advocate, “We choose to live, and we will work together to forge a fulfilling existence. The part that no longer wishes to endure, we will support.”
Shifting an individual’s internal attitude creates new pathways in psychiatric and psychological crisis intervention and support. This is the primary aim of the Suicide Alternative e-book: to generate options for those touched by suicidality in any form. It strives to empower individuals with the understanding that their life, no matter how fractured, can be reassembled in a manner that preserves its worth and their place in the world.

When mobilized, these inner aspects can collaboratively dismantle the illusion that the end of suffering can only be achieved through the cessation of life.
Life, with its inherent ebbs and flows, can often lead individuals to conflate the failure of an endeavor with personal failure. Yet, it is crucial to delineate the person from their projects. A business venture gone awry, a home investment turned sour, or a relationship that has crumbled does not diminish the inherent value and potential of a human life. The e-book emphasizes the importance of separating these entities, highlighting that while our actions and decisions are extensions of ourselves, they are not the sum total of our worth.
By recognizing this, those who are suicidal can begin to see their crises as external events that have happened to them, not as defining elements of their identity. This perception shift is vital.
